Every formula used by these calculators. They match the FNSACC323 Perform financial calculations unit.
Markup calculates profit as a percentage of the cost price. Profit Margin calculates profit as a percentage of the selling price.
Fixed Costs stay the same no matter how much you sell (e.g. rent, insurance). Variable Cost is what it costs to make or deliver one single unit (materials, packaging, per-item shipping) — it goes up and down with sales, unlike fixed costs. Selling Price is what you charge per unit.
The standard rate of VAT in South Africa is 15%. Some basic foods and exports are zero-rated.
Example. A R1,000 price before VAT becomes R1,000 × 1.15 = R1,150. The VAT is R150.
A R1,150 total contains R1,150 × 15 ÷ 115 = R150 of VAT.
Taking 15% off a VAT-inclusive price does not remove the VAT. 15% of R1,150 is R172.50, not R150. Divide by 1.15 instead.
Tax rates and thresholds change. Check the current rules with SARS before relying on a figure.
15% at the standard rate.
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.15. R115 ÷ 1.15 = R100.
15/115, which simplifies to 3/23. Multiply a VAT-inclusive price by 3 and divide by 23 to get the VAT.
