Every formula used by these calculators. They match the FNSACC323 Perform financial calculations unit.
Markup calculates profit as a percentage of the cost price. Profit Margin calculates profit as a percentage of the selling price.
Fixed Costs stay the same no matter how much you sell (e.g. rent, insurance). Variable Cost is what it costs to make or deliver one single unit (materials, packaging, per-item shipping) — it goes up and down with sales, unlike fixed costs. Selling Price is what you charge per unit.
GST in New Zealand is 15% of the price before GST.
Example. A job is quoted at $400 plus GST. The total is $400 × 1.15 = $460 and the GST is $60.
Going the other way, a $460 receipt contains $460 × 3 ÷ 23 = $60 of GST.
Taking 15% off a GST-inclusive price does not remove the GST. 15% of $460 is $69, not $60. The GST is three twenty-thirds of the total, because the total is 115% of the original price.
You must register for GST when your turnover is, or is likely to be, $60,000 or more in a 12-month period. Below that, registering is optional.
Tax rates and thresholds change. Check the current rules with Inland Revenue before relying on a figure.

Multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.15. A $100 price becomes $115 including GST.
