Every formula used by these calculators. They match the FNSACC323 Perform financial calculations unit.
Markup calculates profit as a percentage of the cost price. Profit Margin calculates profit as a percentage of the selling price.
Fixed Costs stay the same no matter how much you sell (e.g. rent, insurance). Variable Cost is what it costs to make or deliver one single unit (materials, packaging, per-item shipping) — it goes up and down with sales, unlike fixed costs. Selling Price is what you charge per unit.
The federal GST is 5% everywhere in Canada. Some provinces combine it with their provincial sales tax into a single harmonized sales tax (HST).
| Where | Tax | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | HST | 13% |
| Nova Scotia | HST | 14% |
| New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island | HST | 15% |
| Rest of Canada | GST | 5% |
British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec charge their own provincial sales tax on top of the 5% GST. To include it, type the combined rate into the rate box.
Example. A $250 sale in Ontario: $250 × 1.13 = $282.50. The HST is $32.50.
A $282.50 total including HST: $282.50 ÷ 1.13 = $250 before tax.
You generally have to register for GST/HST once your worldwide taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that you are a small supplier and registration is optional.
Tax rates and thresholds change. Check the current rules with the Canada Revenue Agency before relying on a figure.
