Every formula used by these calculators. They match the FNSACC323 Perform financial calculations unit.
Markup calculates profit as a percentage of the cost price. Profit Margin calculates profit as a percentage of the selling price.
Fixed Costs stay the same no matter how much you sell (e.g. rent, insurance). Variable Cost is what it costs to make or deliver one single unit (materials, packaging, per-item shipping) — it goes up and down with sales, unlike fixed costs. Selling Price is what you charge per unit.
Example. An item priced at ₹10,000 before GST at 18%: GST = ₹10,000 × 0.18 = ₹1,800, so the total is ₹11,800.
An ₹11,800 price including 18% GST: ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 before GST.
For a sale within one state, the GST is split equally between the central government (CGST) and the state (SGST). On the example above that is ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST.
For a sale between states, the whole amount is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same either way.
Most goods and services fall under the 5% or 18% slab, with a 40% rate on a small list of luxury and sin goods. Some essentials are taxed at nil. The calculator lists these rates, and you can type any other rate that applies to your item, such as the special low rates on gold or the earlier 12% and 28% slabs for older invoices.
Tax rates and thresholds change. Check the current rules with the GST portal before relying on a figure.
Multiply the price before GST by the rate. At 18%, GST on ₹1,000 is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180.
Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. At 18%, ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000.
CGST and SGST each take half of the GST on a sale within a state. IGST is the full GST charged on a sale between states.
