Every formula used by these calculators. They match the FNSACC323 Perform financial calculations unit.
Markup calculates profit as a percentage of the cost price. Profit Margin calculates profit as a percentage of the selling price.
Fixed Costs stay the same no matter how much you sell (e.g. rent, insurance). Variable Cost is what it costs to make or deliver one single unit (materials, packaging, per-item shipping) — it goes up and down with sales, unlike fixed costs. Selling Price is what you charge per unit.
GST in Singapore is 9% of the price before GST.
Example. A $200 price before GST becomes $200 × 1.09 = $218. The GST is $18.
A $218 total contains $218 × 9 ÷ 109 = $18 of GST.
Taking 9% off a GST-inclusive price does not remove the GST. 9% of $218 is $19.62, not $18. Divide by 1.09 instead.
GST registration is compulsory when taxable turnover exceeds S$1 million in a calendar year, or is expected to in the next 12 months.
Tax rates and thresholds change. Check the current rules with IRAS before relying on a figure.
