Every formula used by these calculators. They match the FNSACC323 Perform financial calculations unit.
Markup calculates profit as a percentage of the cost price. Profit Margin calculates profit as a percentage of the selling price.
Fixed Costs stay the same no matter how much you sell (e.g. rent, insurance). Variable Cost is what it costs to make or deliver one single unit (materials, packaging, per-item shipping) — it goes up and down with sales, unlike fixed costs. Selling Price is what you charge per unit.
Ireland’s standard rate of VAT is 23%. A reduced rate of 13.5% and a second reduced rate of 9% apply to particular goods and services.
Example. A €200 net price at the standard rate becomes €200 × 1.23 = €246. The VAT is €46.
A €246 total including VAT is €246 ÷ 1.23 = €200 before VAT.
For the 13.5% rate, multiply or divide by 1.135. For the 9% rate, use 1.09. Pick the rate from the list in the calculator, or type a different one.
Taking 23% off a VAT-inclusive price takes off too much. 23% of €246 is €56.58, but the VAT is €46. Always divide by 1.23 instead.
Tax rates and thresholds change. Check the current rules with Revenue before relying on a figure.
23%. Reduced rates of 13.5% and 9% apply to some goods and services.
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.23. €123 ÷ 1.23 = €100.
Divide the total by 1.23 to get the net price, then subtract it from the total.
